“No more everyday life”
A documentary by Elsa Kvamme about Gunvor Hofmo and Ruth Maier.
From when Gunvor Hofmo and the Jewish refugee Ruth Maier met, there was no more everyday life. Gunvor wanted to be Ruth’s knight and protector; Ruth helped Gunvor become a writer. But in 1942, Ruth Maier was arrested and deported. Gunvor’s world collapses when she learns that Ruth and most other Norwegian Jews were killed immediately after arrival. She refuses to go further and forget, which becomes the epicenter of her writing and destiny. This documentary follows in the footsteps of Gunvor and Ruth. Why was Ruth killed, and why is she still remembered?
Using archive material, interviews, and reconstructed scenes, filmmaker Elsa Kvamme gives us a story about two distinctive women who saw through the chaos in a dark period and found security and community in each other’s company. It is also a story about Gunvor Hofmo, who, despite traumatic experiences and a long struggle against mental illness, eventually came out of the darkness as one of the foremost poets of the post-war period.
