At the Synagogue in Trondheim, we have collected numerous textiles and items used in our religious daily life for over 125 years. For example, a Torah scroll and our

At the Synagogue in Trondheim, we have collected numerous textiles and items used in our religious daily life for over 125 years. For example, a Torah scroll and our Talmud date back to the first Jews who immigrated here from Eastern Europe around the turn of the last century. Over time, more textiles and items have been added, such as tallit, challah covers, kippahs, tablecloths, Passover covers, and many others. Symbols are used in the decorations, which is a tradition worldwide and thus found in most synagogues. In this lecture, you will hear about the background of the traditional symbolism of the items and textiles found in our synagogue. Their use will also be explained, and examples will be shown.
The lecture is by Henriette Kahn and Nikolai Vollik.

Klezmer is Eastern European Jewish folk music. Before the pogroms ravaged Eastern Europe at the beginning of the last century, this musical tradition was an integral part of life in Jewish communities, especially in connection with weddings and other festive occasions. The practice in its authentic form almost died out in connection with the Holocaust, but in recent decades it has experienced a renaissance and is increasingly found on music stages around Europe and the USA. Klezmer music is known for its musical extremes; from the festive and danceable to the poignant and lamenting. Today, klezmer exists in many forms. Some strive for authenticity, while others mix klezmer music with jazz, pop, and rock expressions. What can be stated with certainty is that the genre is more alive today than it has been since the Holocaust.

Expect a modern collection of crazy ballads, windswept klezmer, prison laments, revolutionary hymns and apocalyptic blues – drawn from the tradition of poets such as Gebirtig, Brassens, Dylan, Waits, Guthrie, Schaechter-Gottesman, Cohen and Kahn himself – and from the trio’s long collaboration in the cult cabaret klezmer band “The Painted Bird”.

Musicians from the Hanseatic city of Hamburg sail through Jewish migrations in word and song!
The port of Hamburg is the starting point for this concert. Around 1900, it was the most important emigration port in Europe, and a hub for millions of Eastern European refugees on their way to the New World of America.
With workers’ songs, exile poems and a portion of sailors’ tales, the musicians sing about the port of Hamburg as a place of departure and arrival, as a symbol of home and refuge and as a refuge for hopes and dreams.
Another theme of the production is the Yiddish language, which has always defined itself transnationally and Cross-border. In the performance, revolutionary poets meet modern Yiddish poets. With new and old ballads, it’s about Jewish culture in a time of change and upheaval, flight, hardship, war, expulsion and hope.

“As it is written” is a new performance, specially adapted for the church space, with highlights from the Acts of the Apostles, Mark, Abraham’s children and the God particle.
It will be a time with great texts and a lot of humor. In the performance, Tindberg brings out highlights from the Acts of the Apostles, Mark, Abraham’s children and the God particle. The performances that have made him known and loved far beyond a “normal” theater audience. He also takes the audience a little “behind the scenes”. You’ll see how he as an artist and theater person approaches these texts. “It’s okay to play around with the biblical texts and see what it actually says,” he has said.
The performance lasts for about 60 minutes.

In a world that seems both conflicted and fearful, what could be better than nurturing coexistence and dialogue?
Renowned singer and multi-instrumentalist Ana Silvera and the Palestinian composer, oud virtuoso and singer Saied Silbak joins his creative forces in the project “Songs We Carry”. A new collaboration that explores the common ground between their heritage – the emotional melancholy of Spanish-Jewish Ladino music and language and melodies of the Arabic song tradition.
In this musical collaboration, their music becomes a unique blend of Silvera’s singer-songwriter style and Silbak’s Arabic musical influences. Silbak’s music is characterized by complex rhythms, improvisation and a mix of Arabic music tradition and modern genres. The result is a soundscape that can be both enchanting and captivating for listeners.

Religion as a force for division, hatred and bloodshed is not a new phenomenon. But can religion also be an important force on the front line for reconciliation, hope and peace?
Chief Rabbi Michael Melchior and his Muslim partner Sheikh Abdallah Nimr Darwish established the Middle East Religious Peace Initiative, which today includes hundreds of partners. He will share strategies and obstacles from his inner peace diplomacy from the Middle East and also around the world. His experiences with major political and religious leaders, as well as grassroots activists, provide a completely new and different perspective on the way forward for Israelis and Palestinians as well as for civilization in general.

Iran & Israel – A musical affair!
With the level of conflict in the world as it is, the Jewish Culture Festival Trondheim wants to promote coexistence and dialogue more than ever. Sistanagila – the name is a combination of the Iranian province of Sistan, and the Hebrew folk song Hava Nagila, consists of both Israeli and Iranian musicians fusing their musical traditions. The music consists of klezmer, Sephardic and Persian music, with elements of flamenco, classical music, contemporary music, jazz and even metal.
Through artistic curiosity, new expressions emerge from ancient Jewish and Persian musical traditions, and we get to experience a unique and distinctive sound that only Sistanagila creates.
